Ying-Chia Huang fashion sketch and sculptural model exhibition Hawaick Textilehouse 2

My fashion design exhibiton: Fashion design sketches and sculptures was held between 3rd December 2011 and 28th Feberary 2012 in Haick Textile towerhouse, UK.

About my PhD study

Design reminds me of the magic transformations in "Alice in Wonderland"

I was always fascinated by the changing silhouettes of Alice and seek to create a process for translating similarly magic concepts into realistic garments. Initial ideas for fashion designs often originate from a 2D sketch, and translating all facets of that sketch into a wearable 3D garment throws up a number of challenges for designer, the technologist, and for the communication between the two. Taking from known techniques from classic pattern cutting to architectural modelling, I have developed a new method called sculptural form giving, to reliably translate any innovative 2D design into a working 3D garment. I have tested the method in a series of workshops with fashion design and fashion technology students in the School of Textiles and Design at Heriot-Watt University, to explore it usefulness for different professional groups within the fashion industry.
